Press Tips
Media and Press Suggestions
MATERIALS
It’s a good idea to create a poster for the event to supplement community outreach and to provide a good visual representation you can get out to media with the announcement. You should also create and arrange the information into a media announcement that includes a breakdown of what people can expect from the event, who’s going to be speaking, when, where, how people can purchase tickets, what bands are playing, and contact information in case there are questions.
EVENT CALENDAR LISTINGS
This part of the process consists of going to all of the online event calendars, logging in and posting about the event. There are easy to follow instructions with most, and you’ll usually benefit from also having that image of the flier or poster for the event that you can post along with the info.
- Check for online event calendars on the sites of your local newspapers. Usually they will have event posting areas.
- Check for online event calendars on all the major TV and radio station’s sites.
- [Sometimes] your local city magazines will have online event calendars where you can post your info.
- Post on your city’s Craigslist, Backpage and Yelp sites.
MEDIA OUTREACH
It’s always a good idea to reach out and call media outlets – newspapers, TV and radio – and tell them about your event. For print, go online to their websites and find out what reporter is writing about your specific type of event and contact them. Also ask for the email of the person who runs the events calendar. For TV, you’d also ask for the email of the news desk so you can send them the event announcement. For radio, you might ask for the emails of the program director and some of the on-air talent.
