In the summer of 2006, while in the early throes of chemotherapy and radiation, former First Descents' Executive Director Allen Goldberg challenged his best and oldest friend Brent Goldstein to compete in the 2007 Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race in Leadville, CO. Won recently by Lance Armstrong, the Leadville 100 covers 104 miles of off-road high-altitude mountain biking with nearly 14,000 feet of cumulative climbs. This was a daughting task for a former "weekend warrior", but when Brent considered what his friend was facing, he accepted the challenge enlisted a few other biking friends to join him, trained for nearly a year and succeeded in not only completing the race in a respectable time, but in raising over $80,000 for the First Fescents foundation. Sadly, Allen passed away in June 2008, however Brent and his fellow Team FD Leadville racers all felt strongly about continuing to support his memeory and his legacy through the First Descents mission. So they raced Leadville in 2008, each of them improving on their performance from the prior year, and raised nearly $115,000 for First Descents. Despite a poor economy, Brent and a growing group of Team FD Leadville racers (11guys in 2009) raced Leadville again in 2009 and raised another $81,000 for FD. Team FD Leadville is now setting its sights on Leadville 2010 and beyond. If you can make it through the annual LT100 entrant lottery, we welcome you to join Team FD Leadville.
