Camp Moms

We’d like to give a special thanks to Mama Ludden (FD’s original camp mom) for her insight into this important role at camp!

The Camp Mom (or Dad) position is a wonderful one, so look forward to a week that will forever change your life! Camp Moms/Dads attend First Descents programs to assist the staff and participants in anyway possible. Camp Mom/Dad is the person working in the background to ensure that things run smoothly for everyone at camp. Moms/Dads are there to observe, listen and communicate any participant issues or needs. Any concerns should be shared with the appropriate staff or the Director.

Ideally, at each program we will have one professional chef and one supporting Camp Mom/Dad. The majority of camp responsibilities take place in the kitchen – assisting the chef with grocery shopping, food prep, cooking and kitchen cleanup.

A Sampling of Camp Mom/Dad Duties:

  • Assist the chef with grocery shopping, meal prep and kitchen cleanup throughout the week
  • Stock vehicles with appropriate items for the day: sunscreen, bug spray, ice, extra drinks and snacks, etc.
  • Set up a “lunch bar” around breakfast time for participants to make their own sack lunch
  • Set up a “Happy Hour” spread for when participants return from the day’s activities
  • Maintain bathrooms: wipe down counters with an antibacterial agent, stock soap and towels, take out trash, etc.
  • Help run shuttles

The Camp Mom/Dad position is an incredibly valuable role; everyone loves their Camp Mom/Dad. We want our Camp Moms/Dads to participate in the week’s activities as well so we encourage you to work with the Camp Directorand the chef to create a schedule that will allow you to get out on the rock, river or ocean with the rest of the crew.
