This August, a team of committed riders take on the epic Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race in Leadville, CO – 104 miles long with over 14,000 feet of elevation gain at altitudes up to 12,600 feet. In 2015, Team First Descents Leadville hit an amazing milestone by surpassing $1 Million raised. In 2016, the team celebrated another milestone: 10 years of Team FD Leadville. It is an incredible accomplishment for a group of intrepid, committed, huge-hearted mountain-bikers. This year will be the 12th Annual First Descents Leadville Ride.
Historically, this race has embodied the heart and hustle that encompasses the FD Out Living It spirit. In 2006, First Descents’ Executive Director, Allan Goldberg, suffered a recurrence of cancer that had been in remission for 26 years. Allan needed a challenge to help him mentally prepare for the long months of chemo and radiation ahead. He chose the 2007 Leadville 100 mountain-bike race and challenged his oldest and best friend, Brent Goldstein, to join him. They all raced the 2007 Leadville 100, and more importantly, raised nearly $85,000 for First Descents. Sadly, Allan passed away in 2008. Ten years after Allan’s death, Team First Descents rides in his honor.
Through the Leadville 100 MTB, we celebrate the life of Allan, Steve Gichner, and all the young men and women impacted by cancer.
