This August, a team of committed riders will take on the infamous Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race in Leadville, CO – 104 miles long with over 14,000 feet of elevation gain at altitudes up to 12,600 feet.
This will be the 14th year First Descents has fielded a Leadville 100 MTB team as it has a special place in our hearts. In 2006, First Descents’ Executive Director, Allan Goldberg, suffered a recurrence of cancer that had been in remission for 26 years. Allan needed a challenge to help him mentally prepare for the long months of chemo and radiation ahead. He chose the 2007 Leadville 100 mountain-bike race and challenged his oldest and best friend, Brent Goldstein, to join him. They all raced the 2007 Leadville 100 and raised nearly $85,000 for First Descents! Sadly, Allan passed away in 2008.
Now, in his honor Team First Descents lives on.
Through the Leadville 100 MTB, we celebrate the life of Allan, Steve Gichner, and all the young people impacted by cancer.
