This will be the 20th year that First Descents has fielded a team for the infamous Leadville Trail 100 MTB mountain bike race in Leadville, Colo. The course is 104 miles long, with over 12,000 feet of elevation gain at altitudes up to 12,600 feet!

In 2006, First Descents’ Executive Director Allan Goldberg suffered a cancer recurrence after 26 years of remission. Allan needed a challenge to help him mentally prepare for the long months of chemo and radiation ahead. He chose the 2007 Leadville Trail 100 MTB, and he challenged his oldest and best friend, Brent Goldstein, to join him. They raced together that year and raised nearly $85,000 for First Descents! Allan passed away in 2008, and Team First Descents rides on in his honor, 20 years strong.

Brent Goldstein will celebrate his 60th birthday next summer with family and friends in Leadville, where he hopes to become just the 17th person, out of more than 17,000 mountain bike racers who have ever toed the line, to earn the coveted 2,000-mile buckle. The buckle is awarded to athletes who complete 20 cumulative finishes.
