After attending a whitewater kayaking Core Program in Mount Hood, Oregon, in 2019, breast cancer thriver Amanda “Sweet Keys” Salazar’s perspective on life shifted — she was ready to welcome new adventure and travel opportunities with open arms. Now, Sweet Keys is passionate about coming together with the FD community by hosting and attending Community Adventures in Austin and San Antonio.
A friend of mine had attended a First Descents whitewater kayaking program and shared her experience with me. Before we chatted about it, I had no idea this organization existed, so I immediately looked into it the day she told me about it. I’m so happy I got to join a weeklong program!
My nickname is Sweet Keys because I play piano and the group thought I was sweet!
This organization means a lot to me. On my program, I learned to reconnect with nature and jump into adventure. My program was really life-changing, and it changed my entire life perspective. I love connecting with other cancer survivors, so I knew I wanted to continue to connect with my local community when I returned home to San Antonio after my program. Since my program, I’ve traveled a lot and have been more open to adventure and meeting new people. I always felt fulfilled after attending a few Community Adventures in Austin, and I have enjoyed the adventures I’ve done here in the San Antonio area.
I have participated in five Community Adventures in Austin and have led three in San Antonio.
When we went tubing in New Braunfels! It was special because we had two women drive from the Dallas area to attend, and they knew a friend of mine who had passed. It was so wonderful to connect and share memories with those ladies!
I love meeting the local FD community. I always gain fresh perspectives and get to meet people from different backgrounds and circumstances on Community Adventures. It’s so inspiring to hear others’ stories, even though I hate that there are so many young adults that have gone through cancer or MS.
I love spending time on the water whenever I can. The sound of the water’s movement brings me peace and offers healing, especially from the intense Texas heat.
